Using this construction:

If I would have been there, I would have... 

rather than saying:

If I had been there, I would have...

This is an excellent complaint, Rick and you're now an official curmudgeon!

According to Barb Dwyer, the subjunctive mood permits an even more elegant construction:

Had I been there, I would have...
