New Ask Us Theory About

curmdgeon.GIF (1254 bytes) Curmudgeons' Corner

Bruce Yanoshek is baaaack

Here we are in the land of the free and the home of the brave, and the word "free" (in the commercial sense, at least) is being stolen from us. Free used to mean "at no charge." Thanks to the ubiquitous cell-phone companies, it is being shifted to mean "at no extra charge." They are tricking us into thinking that "100 free minutes for $19.95 a month" makes sense. Free is free, and $19.95 a month is not. I want my freedom back!

There is also an age-old practice that bothers us:  charging $19.95 for something on the assumption that it sounds noticeably cheaper than $20, when the nickel difference is not worth mentioning!

Is there something you read or hear that sends you up the wall?

Do tell us.
